Introduction
As has been said in previous editions of the Directory of Curriculum Materials Centers, many institutions of higher education in the United States and Canada support their teacher education programs by developing curriculum materials centers (CMCs) that feature instructional materials representative of those found in preschool through high school (pre K-12) settings. These materials often constitute a separately maintained and housed collection and are often adjoined by a media production facility.

This Directory, now in its 5th edition, lists and describes curriculum materials centers or collections at over 200 institutions that responded to a data collection survey that was made available on the web.

The construction of the data collection web site was facilitated by the Director of Publications at ACRL, who, following the data collection phase, sent the database to the committee for review. After data cleanup, the database was returned for mounting on the web server.

Compared to past editions, for which the majority of the responses were submitted via mail or email, for this edition the majority of the responses were received via web site collection. It should be noted that annual budget information and circulation statistics are for the period 1999-2000, and the data regarding student enrollment information is for fall 2000.

Information in this directory was self-reported by the institution. Not all participants responded to all items. Email addresses are provided, as well as additional contact information, for each CMC. Many of the CMCs provided URLs for their OPAC and/or CMC web page for inclusion in the Directory.

Changes have been made in the format of the CMC Directory from previous editions. With the 5th edition, the Directory is now searchable in addition to being available in a portable document format (PDF) file for those who wish to print a paper copy.

The following are searchable fields: type of institution, CMC material budget, teacher education full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment as of fall 2000, and institution FTE enrollment as of fall 2000. After receiving responses based on the initial search, you may then restrict the search further by subfields, such as collection size, staff, or budget information.

Please refer to the Directory site at the E-Pubs Corner (http://acrl.telusys.com/epubs/) and/or to the EBSS web site at http://www.lib.msu.edu/corby/ebss/comm.htm for information regarding future editions of the Directory.

The Curriculum Materials Centers Directory Revision Ad Hoc Committee are members of the Education and Behavioral Science Section (EBSS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). The Committee revised the previous survey, solicited participants, followed-up nonresponding institutions, and monitored the construction of the format of the Directory. The Committee also envisioned and created the enhanced electronic version of the Directory.

The Committee strived to maintain the consistency of the data collected, however due to the removal of the page restrictions imposed by providing the Directory in print format, they were able to enhance the Directory. The ability to search the Directory by selected fields of information should enhance the usability of the Directory for comparison purposes. The Committee was insistent that there also be a printable version of the Directory, and a portable document format (PDF) version has been provided for those who wish to download and print a copy to be used for quick reference.

Acknowledgements
The Curriculum Materials Centers Directory Revision Ad Hoc Committee of the Educational and Behavioral Sciences Section (EBSS) of Association of College and Research Libraries (ARCL), a division of the American Library Association, wishes to thank the leadership of EBSS and in particular, the EBSS Publication Committee for their support. In addition, the Committee wishes to thank the ACRL Director of Publications for his guidance and support during the Directory enhancement process. It is through his efforts that the electronic version of the Directory has been accomplished.

The Chair wishes to thank the members of the Curriculum Materials Centers Directory Committee for their hard work soliciting the CMCs to update their information. The Committee decided to gather the data via a data collection web page to reduce errors from rekeying of data. Most importantly the Committee had the vision to increase the usability of the Directory by creating a searchable electronic version.
